OUR NAME

What’s in a name?
We’re proud to work as a group of women from across the globe. So, we wanted a name that could transcend language barriers and mean something to every one of us. We don’t know if you’ve ever tried, but that’s hard to find!
But then we discovered the word Bereket, meaning abundance, blessing and plenty. With its origins found in the Arabic language, Bereket has been borrowed in both Turkish and Persian. As those are the three main languages spoken in our organisation, it seemed like a good fit.
To us, the name ‘Bereket’ symbolises what we want to do together. Create abundance where women have so little. Richness in place of poverty. Plenty instead of want.

A word from the creators
We are an international group of women who are helping each other learn new skills and create beautiful and unique products. We are refugee women who are now living in Turkey. Some of us are fleeing the civil war in Syria, some are part of the Christian minority in Iraq who have escaped from ISIS and some have had to leave family and friends behind in Iran.
We are Muslim and Christian sisters who are working together to take control of our situation. We value everyone's heritage and culture. We are not a statistic, we are as individual as the hand-crafted goods we have created.
